Refresh and Inspire with Practical Psychology

The exciting and dynamic practical psychology course to refresh and inspire Music Teachers, & Performers Including step-by-step playing by ear and improvising for fun and for teaching (no previous experience necessary) and fresh approaches for dealing with performance anxiety.

Open to all instrumental and singing teachers and performers, the course can be attended as a whole (recommended), or on a daily basis.

Aiming to satisfy the interests and needs of everyone present, the course heightens awareness of the energy or spirit in lessons and performances, affirms and deepens you in your intuition, develops your psychological understanding of what’s needed for effective and enjoyable lessons and performances, and offers a wealth of practical, technical and musical tips -including step-by-step playing by ear and improvisation. And there are performance opportunites.

There is also time to relax and explore the local coast and countryside, listen to the daily lunchtime and evening concerts, swim in the sea and even learn Welsh Dancing.

Monday 23rd July 9.00-12.30: Practical Psychology for Teaching

Understanding pupils: What they’re thinking and feeling; What they need from teachers. Understanding ourselves as teachers: The power and effects of our thoughts, words and touch; Working in partnership with pupils; Helping them find their unique path; How to achieve results and also reduce stress
Afternoon options: Concert and Master Class

4.30–6.00: Improvisation and Playing by Ear

Simple, musically satisfying, step-by-step ideas for enjoyment and teaching.
No previous experience necessary.

Foyer Music and Concert in the Arts Centre
Welsh Dancing

Tuesday 24th July 9.00-12.30: Practical Psychology for Performing

Understanding and dealing with performing anxiety; Engaging the audience as allies; How to practise and prepare physically, emotionally and mentally for a secure and deeply satisfying musical performance that you enjoy giving.
Afternoon options: Concert and Master Class

4.30-6.00: Group teaching

The advantages of group lessons; How to create and maintain safe and inspiring group energy; Creative ideas for what to do with groups: musical activities and “safe circle” performances.
Evening options:Foyer Music and Concert in the Arts Centre

Wednesday 25th July 9.00-12.30: Practical Psychology for Learning

Understanding learning: how we learn; why we do and why we don’t learn; Self support vs. self sabotage; Developing confidence; How to motivate oneself and pupils; Staying with it when the going gets tough; Using multiple learning strategies (aural, visual, kinesthetic, whole bodied, intellectual, imaginative, intuitive, creative etc.); Helping people with learning difficulties.
Afternoon options: Concert and Master Class
The afternoon is free for optional, weather dependent, trips into the countryside to explore mountains, waterfalls and the coast.

Thursday 26th July 9.00-12.30: Practical Psychology for professional & personal issues

Understanding the problems and pressures from pupils, parents, schools and colleges: how they arise and how to deal with them all. Practical strategies for coping with personal or professional difficulties e.g. lack of confidence, conflicts and challenge.
Afternoon options: Concert and Master Class

4.30-6.00 Practice Performance

Participants perform to each other, informally, to try out the tips and techniques learnt on Tuesday and to deepen confidence.
Evening options:
Foyer Music and Concert in the Arts Centre

Friday 27th July 9.00-12.30: Practical Magic to enhance Teaching, Learning and Performing using subtle and sensory energy techniques (imagery, visualisation, intuition, touch and movement).

This is often the most exciting, enlightening and ground breaking day of the whole course, as the trust generated between participants throughout the week, and the depth of understanding reached, enables exciting new insights and skills to emerge.

Previous Course Participants

The course begins at 9.00am on Monday 23rd July and ends at 12.30pm on Friday 27th July. Accommodation is available for course participants from Saturday 21st – Sunday 29th July so that, if desired, they can enjoy all of the Musicfest Concerts and Events from Saturday 21st until Saturday 28th July.

COST: Course: £300 reduced to £275 if paid by 1st May, 2012. Or £60 per day

ACCOMMODATION: £225 for 8 nights (21st – 28th July inc.) or £28 per night
